Symposium on "Political and Leadership Empowerment for Jordanian Women" at Amman Arab University
The Minister of State for Legal Affairs, Chairperson of the Ministerial Committee for the Empowerment of Women, Wafaa Bani Mustafa, called on women to invest in the recently approved constitutional and legal amendments, and to take the lead in transforming this enabling legislative environment into a tangible reality by engaging in public and political affairs. This came during a symposium organized by Amman Arab University, in cooperation with the Ministry of Youth, entitled "Political and Leadership Empowerment for Jordanian Women", with the participation of the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Youth, Dr. Hussein Jabour, and the University's president, Prof. Mohamad Al-Widyan.
Bani Mustafa said that these legislative achievements must be accompanied by an improvement in the general political environment through the interaction of political forces and all civil society institutions, in rooting and consolidating the actual participation of women in public and political affairs, and indicated that the beginning of the Jordanian women’s movement led by Jordanian pioneers was characterized by human rights demands.
During the dialogue session, which was moderated by the Vice President of the University, Prof. Dr. Ikhlas Al-Tarawneh, Bani Mustafa reviewed the most prominent constitutional amendments that were approved and came in favor of empowering women and youth, and the most important articles that were amended in the election and party laws to empower women and youth politically and increase their representation in the House of Representatives. Emphasizing that the participation of women in political life is not a luxury, but rather a national requirement in the interest of the state.
Prof. Mohamad Al-Widyan, president of the University, said that it is our pleasure to meet you in the premises of our University, especially to mention Her Excellency Bani Mustafa, as a national stature, a woman of high standing, long experience, wide culture, and her effective role in political and leadership affairs. At the conclusion of his speech Al-Widyan thanked the attendees and the organizers of the symposium.
At the end of the symposium, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Al-Widyan, President of the University, handed over to Ms. Bani Mustafa the University shield, as well as the shield of the representative of the Minister of Youth, Dr. Hussain Al-Jabour.
