As part of Amman Arab University’s commitment to strengthening its presence in specialized scientific events and reaffirming its role in supporting occupational health and safety issues, as well as protecting people and the environment in line with scientific and professional developments in the handling of hazardous chemicals, the Faculty of Pharmacy participated in a scientific day organized by the Jordan Engineers Association entitled “Safe Management of Hazardous Chemicals and the Role of Safety Data Sheets in Prevention and Protection.” The Faculty was represented by Engineer Aisha Al-Jarrah.

Engineer Al-Jarrah explained that the scientific day addressed a range of specialized themes focusing on key issues in the safe management of hazardous chemicals, within the framework of promoting awareness of chemical safety culture and adherence to approved professional standards. The discussions covered scientific, practical, and legislative aspects, with the participation of specialists and experts in the field. The program included a dedicated session on Safety Data Sheets (SDS), highlighting their essential role in identifying chemical hazards, safe handling methods, preventive measures, and first-aid procedures, thereby contributing to the reduction of chemical incidents in various work environments.

The scientific day also addressed the principles of safety in handling hazardous chemicals and related industrial operations, with emphasis on proper practices during storage, transportation, and use, as well as the importance of providing personal protective equipment and continuous training for workers to ensure a safe working environment. From a legislative perspective, participants discussed regulatory and legal frameworks governing the management of hazardous chemicals and waste, highlighting the role of regulatory authorities in monitoring compliance with established regulations, as well as inspection and oversight mechanisms aimed at minimizing risks and protecting public health and the environment.

In addition, requirements for occupational health and safety in the handling and use of hazardous chemicals were discussed, with emphasis on the importance of health risk assessment, conducting periodic medical examinations for workers, and implementing emergency response systems in cases of exposure or chemical spills.

The scientific day concluded with a discussion of best practices in the management of hazardous industrial waste, reviewing modern methods of treatment and safe disposal and their role in reducing negative impacts on people and the work environment, as well as supporting the principles of environmental sustainability. Speakers emphasized the importance of integrating academic knowledge with practical application and strengthening chemical safety culture across institutions to protect workers, preserve the environment, and achieve sustainable development.

In turn, Professor Dr. Rana Abu Huweij, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Amman Arab University, affirmed that the participation of faculty and staff in scientific days and specialized events aligns with the University’s vision of supporting academic excellence and enhancing integration between theoretical and practical aspects.
