Sustainable Development Council at AAU

 Association of Arab Universities agreed to establish and choose AAU as aq headquarter for sustainable development council to be a vital member among the educational institutions annexed to the Association to achieve higher education goals in the Arab Homeland and raise the performance standard of higher education personnel.

Professor Mohamad Al-Widyan, president of the University, pointed out that AAU obtained the approval of the executive council for the (53) session of the general conference held during 14-15/11/2021 under the title “sustainable development” within the councils emerged from the association and choose AAU as a headquarter after submitting a comprehensive file regarding this topic. The President of the University also added that the council will include a number of universities from Arab states, and the council will enhance values of sustainability, set up criteria in these universities, establish executive plans applied through amending and developing curriculum and academic programs to expand the culture of sustainability for the next generations, and connect graduation projects, semester activities, and Master and Ph.D. theses to find solutions for the local community problems, link activities of universities with the surrounding environment to improve it, make these universities centers of education for their communities by disseminating the culture of sustainability for natural resources, and to offer a program for evaluating these universities by monitoring the range of applying criteria of sustainability in the universities and ranking them on Arab level.

Accordingly, Professor Al-Widyan, emphasized that criteria of sustainability in Arab higher education institutions might be set which will consider their particularity and goals of sustainability approved by the UN, in addition to the possibility of holding an Arab conference and establishing an electronic site on the web to identify this idea. It has been mentioned that this council will be directed by 8 members: presidents of universities headed by the AAU president and a director of the council –a faculty member at the University-which may enhance the significant role of AAU leadership on the Arab level.
