Amman Arab University Pharmacy Students Participate in Anti-Smoking Training Course to Promote Healthy Lifestyles
In line with Amman Arab University and its College of Pharmacy’s vision to develop students' skills and prepare them for the job market, a group of pharmacy students participated in a two-day training course titled "Empowering University Students with Awareness and Educational Skills on the Dangers of Smoking and the Importance of Adopting Healthy Lifestyles." The course was organized by the Cancer Control Office at the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) in collaboration with the Jordanian Universities Anti-Tobacco and Smoking Union, as part of ongoing efforts to raise awareness about public health issues.
The training aimed to enhance students' awareness of tobacco use globally and locally, highlighting the factors contributing to its prevalence among adolescents and young adults. Key topics included: The concept of tobacco addiction and its health risks. The impact of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) on individuals' health.
The social and psychological effects of smoking, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of the risks associated with tobacco use.
The course also featured case study analyses to explore the real-world impact of tobacco on individuals and society. Additionally, participants were trained in effective communication skills to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. Emphasis was placed on adopting a healthy lifestyle to prevent smoking-related diseases and fostering a culture of avoiding smoking environments.
On this occasion, Prof. Dr. Rana Abu Huwaij, Dean of the College of Pharmacy at Amman Arab University, stated that this course is part of a series of training initiatives aimed at empowering students to become influencers in public health. She highlighted that students were trained to raise awareness among their peers and the community about the harms of smoking through peer education and community outreach programs.
At the end of the course, participating students received training certificates, qualifying them to play an active role in promoting smoking cessation and public health awareness. This aligns with the objectives of the Smoking Cessation Clinic established at Amman Arab University a year ago, which provides medical and psychological support to those seeking to quit smoking and break this harmful habit.
The students expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to gain practical skills in health advocacy, reaffirming their commitment to combatting tobacco use and promoting healthier lifestyles within their communities.
