Scientific Lecture at Amman Arab University (AAU) on “Ethics of Using Animals in Scientific Research”
As part of Amman Arab University’s ongoing efforts to enhance students’ awareness of ethical practices in scientific research, and in continuation of its commitment to preparing scientifically and ethically qualified researchers, the Faculty of Pharmacy hosted Professor Dr. Khawla Nuseir from the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at Jordan University of Science and Technology to deliver a scientific lecture entitled “The Use of Animals in Scientific Research.” The lecture was delivered within the framework of the Research Project course, under the supervision of Dr. Lobna Gharaibeh, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Amman Arab University.
During the lecture, Dr. Nseir addressed the scientific and ethical foundations governing the use of animals in research studies, emphasizing the importance of adhering to internationally recognized principles in this field—foremost among them the 3Rs principle: Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement. These principles aim to minimize animal suffering and ensure that animals are used only when scientifically necessary, in a manner that achieves research objectives efficiently and responsibly. She also reviewed the local and international laws, regulations, and policies governing animal use in research, as well as the role of research ethics committees in reviewing and approving research protocols to ensure compliance with ethical standards and the protection of both human and animal rights. The lecture featured an interactive discussion on modern alternatives to animal use in scientific research, such as computational models, in vitro cell cultures, and biological simulation techniques, reflecting the rapid advancement of contemporary research methodologies.
In this context, Professor Dr. Rana Abu Hwaij, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Amman Arab University, emphasized the importance of instilling a culture of responsible scientific research among students and strengthening their awareness of their role as future researchers in achieving a balance between scientific progress and ethical considerations. Such efforts contribute to enhancing the quality of scientific research, strengthening public trust in its outcomes, and supporting the goals of sustainable development.
