Faculty of Pharmacy at Amman Arab University (AAU) Organizes an Awareness Lecture Entitled “Handling Chemical Materials and Laboratory Safety”

As part of Amman Arab University’s ongoing efforts to promote a culture of public safety and to apply quality standards in the educational and scientific research environment, the Faculty of Pharmacy organized a specialized training course entitled “Handling Chemical Materials and Laboratory Safety” for students of the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences. The course was delivered by Dr. Adel Ardakani, a faculty member at the Faculty of Pharmacy and an expert in laboratory safety and chemical materials management, who possesses extensive experience in safety systems and risk management in educational institutions.

The workshop aimed to enhance students’ awareness of preventive procedures that ensure their safety, the safety of staff, and the maintenance of a safe and well-organized educational environment. The course featured a combination of theoretical presentations and interactive discussions, allowing participants to acquire practical skills that can be directly applied in daily laboratory work.

The training course covered a range of advanced scientific and practical topics, including the principles of safe handling of chemical substances and their classification according to hazard levels, proper preparation methods during laboratory experiments, and immediate response mechanisms to laboratory accidents and chemical spills. The course also focused on chemical safety principles in accordance with international environmental and health standards and trained participants on emergency procedures and first aid in cases of exposure to incidents such as injuries caused by broken glass or hazardous chemical spills.

The program included the presentation and analysis of real-life incident case studies aimed at enhancing preparedness and improving proper emergency response, such as an ammonia gas leak in a school laboratory. In addition, the course addressed the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning and the safe use of heating devices, given the frequency of such incidents during the winter season. Participants were also warned against mixing cleaning chemicals and informed of the serious health and safety risks associated with such practices.

In this context, Professor Dr. Rana Abu Huweij, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Amman Arab University, emphasized that this course is part of the Faculty’s strategic plan to develop a safe and sustainable working and learning environment. She noted that the safety of students and staff is a top priority for the University and affirmed that the Faculty of Pharmacy continuously seeks to organize workshops and training courses that reinforce the University’s commitment to safe and responsible educational practices.

For his part, Dr. Adel Ardakani expressed his satisfaction with the positive interaction of participants, praising the Faculty of Pharmacy’s commitment to investing in community awareness and highlighting the important role of pharmacists in promoting health awareness on issues that protect citizens and contribute to public health safety.
