Amman Arab University (AAU) Hosts Scientific Day on Pharmacists’ Legal and Professional Responsibilities

Under the directives of Professor Mohammad Al-Widyan, President of Amman Arab University, the Faculties of Pharmacy and Law organized a scientific day titled "The Pharmacist’s Legal Responsibility in Healthcare Delivery." The event aimed to integrate health and legal sciences, bridge academic knowledge with professional practice, solidify concepts of legal and professional accountability in pharmacy, promote a culture of responsibility in healthcare, and prepare pharmacists cognizant of their profession’s legal and ethical dimensions. Select experts in health and law attended the proceedings.

Professor Dr. Rana Abu Huwaij, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, emphasized the critical synergy between health and legal sciences amid rapid medical advancements. She highlighted the growing need for a legal framework regulating pharmaceutical practice to ensure patient safety and protect stakeholders' rights, noting that pharmacy practice remains incomplete without deep awareness of its governing legal and ethical dimensions to balance healthcare providers’ and recipients’ interests.

The scientific day featured two panel discussions addressing legal and professional challenges in the pharmaceutical sector. The first session, moderated by Dr. Mohammad Al-Matalqah and Dr. Musa Al-Qa’aidah, featured His Excellency Jamal Al-Shamaileh, Commissioner General of the National Centre for Human Rights. In his intervention "Human Rights in Healthcare," he underscored health as a fundamental human right guaranteed by international conventions. Al-Shamaileh advocated collaborative approaches between health and regulatory institutions to ensure equitable, safe, and comprehensive healthcare access. He detailed the Centre’s monitoring of health services nationwide, recommending geographical equity in resource distribution, developing medical accountability legislation, and establishing a national drug safety database to reduce medical errors.

Dr. Muhannad Abu Moghli, Legal Advisor to Amman Arab University, delivered a lecture on Jordan’s legislative framework for pharmaceutical practice. He examined key legal ambiguities and regulatory challenges facing pharmacists, stressing the urgency of updating laws to align with professional advancements and harmonizing legal requirements with practical applications to ensure optimal pharmaceutical standards.

The second session, moderated by Dr. Dina Abu Saleh, focused on medication errors and safety. Dr. Lina Al-Hamadani, Executive Director of the Medication Errors Awareness Foundation, presented "Medical Errors: Types and Causes," classifying medication errors and outlining pharmacists’ role in preventing them through enhanced professional accuracy.

Dr. Salah Qandel, Deputy CEO of Tawreed Jordan, highlighted the Jordan Pharmacists Association’s vital role in empowering pharmacists and advancing their professional standing. He showcased the Association’s strategic initiatives to qualify pharmacists, elevate their competencies, and enable their adaptation to evolving legislative environments—ensuring enhanced pharmaceutical performance and medication safety standards. Dr. Qandel emphasized the Association’s pivotal role in protecting pharmacists’ rights and fostering innovative work environments to cement pharmacy as a cornerstone of the national health system.

The event included a research exhibition featuring innovative pharmacy projects on professional responsibility by Faculty of Pharmacy students, alongside an institutional showcase by the Media and Public Relations Department. Concluding the day, participants and speakers were honored for enriching legal and professional awareness among pharmaceutical professionals.
