Amman Arab University (AAU) Enhances a Smoke-Free Campus Environment with a Training Workshop for Campus Security Staff

As part of Amman Arab University’s commitment to promoting a healthy and safe environment on campus, the Higher Committee for Combating Smoking and Drugs organized a training workshop for campus security staff. The workshop was delivered by Professor Dr. Rana Abu Hweij, Chair of the Higher Committee for Combating Smoking and Drugs, with the aim of strengthening their role in enforcing the university’s no-smoking policy and raising awareness of the procedures to be followed when dealing with violations. This effort supports the university’s mission to foster a healthy culture that safeguards the well-being of the campus community.

The workshop addressed the mechanisms for how campus security staff should handle with smoking cases within university facilities. Dr. Abu Hweij explained that the first step is to politely and professionally warn violators, informing them that smoking is prohibited in enclosed areas on campus. She also emphasized the requirement to maintain a distance of at least seven meters from any entrance or window of university buildings. Furthermore, Dr. Abu Hweij noted that if the violator fails to comply after being warned, security staff have the authority to issue a violation. Student violations are referred to the Deanship of Student Affairs for appropriate disciplinary action, while staff violations are escalated to the Head of the Anti-Smoking Committee to follow up according to the university’s approved policies and regulations.

In this context, Dr. Abu Hweij stressed the pivotal role of campus security staff in supporting Amman Arab University’s efforts to implement a smoke-free campus policy. She affirmed that cooperation and coordination among all university entities contribute to establishing a healthy and safe environment for all members of the campus community, alongside full compliance with approved procedures and regulations to ensure effective enforcement of the no-smoking policy.
