"Amman Arab University (AAU) Pharmacy" Launches the Initiative "Let's Collaborate for Clean Air" to Promote a Smoke-Free University Environment
As part of Amman Arab University’s ongoing efforts to promote a healthy, smoke-free campus environment, the Faculty of Pharmacy, in cooperation with the Department of Engineering, Safety, and Public Services, organized an initiative under the slogan "Let's Collaborate for Clean Air" aimed at raising awareness among students and university staff about the dangers of smoking and its negative effects on public health and the university environment.
The initiative included a range of awareness and service activities, most notably:
Setting up an informational booth to provide health tips and guidance on the harms of smoking, presented by health ambassadors from the Faculty of Pharmacy, including students Thamama Zrqan, Aya Al-Masoud, Alaa Al-Sharif, Dima Al-Mafarjah, and Hassan Shmayleh.
Hanging 100 awareness signage posters across various university buildings with the help of the Department of Engineering, Safety, and Public Services staff, Mr. Hamza Abu Damis and Mr. Ibrahim Nahnoun, emphasizing the importance of adhering to a smoke-free campus.
Receiving visitors who wish to quit smoking at the Smoking Cessation Clinic in the Faculty of Pharmacy, where they were provided with specialized support and guidance from Dr. Celine Abu Ghosh and Dr. Hamza Al-Hamawi. This initiative supports healthy behaviors and encourages students and staff to adopt a smoke-free lifestyle.
Launching the "Best Smoke-Free Building" competition with motivational slogans reflecting the initiative’s spirit, such as: "For a healthy environment, clean air, and a better life," "Be part of the change, help make our university a model of a healthy environment," and "Clean air starts with us."
The goal of the competition is to encourage all academic faculties and administrative units to maintain a smoke-free environment within buildings, raise awareness about the health risks of smoking, and foster a sense of cooperation and social responsibility among students and staff.
In this regard, Professor Dr. Rena Abu Huwaij, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Chair of the University’s Anti-Smoking Committee, stated that the evaluation of participating buildings will be based on clear criteria, including full compliance with no smoking inside the building, the cooperation of students and staff in awareness efforts, cleanliness, and the availability of appropriate signage. She added that periodic field visits by the committee will be conducted, and the results will be announced during the Anti-Smoking Scientific Day on May 31, 2026. The management of the winning building will be awarded a certificate of appreciation and a symbolic prize, aiming to reinforce the culture of commitment to a healthy and sustainable campus environment and to promote social responsibility within the university.
